The Stones
The Stones
28 May
With the passing of the Summer Solstice, Stonehenge has appeared a lot on our screens over the last couple of days.
I had the incredible privilege to photograph Stonehenge a few years back for a national campaign by English Heritage.
They literally closed the place down for me.
It was 5am when I turned up on site, just me, a security guard and my contact from EH. To be honest, I had seen many photos of the henge previously and whilst I had thought it looked amazing, I didn't quite get what all the fuss was about.
I had struggled with how to photograph it. There are so many photos out there already. I wanted to show it in a new way. I literally walked the perimeter 5 times before finding a composition that resonated with me. It would require some complex focus stacking and pano-stitching techniques, all within a 2 minute time frame as the sun rose in a specific position.
Talk about pressure.
As the sun came up that morning and golden light permeated through the apertures of the stones, I saw what our ancestors would have seen. It felt like a conduit between heaven and earth. People talk about a resonance. I felt something. Connected. Calm. Peaceful.
If you get a chance then please visit this incredible place.
